Is Your Hospitality Business Ready for a Robot?

In collaboration with UCF's Targeted Research Training (TRT) Program, Bear Robotics participated in a comprehensive study exploring the impact of service robots on the hospitality industry. The findings, recently featured in a Harvard Business Review article, shed light on the challenges and opportunities associated with the adoption of service robots in restaurants, particularly in the context of workforce implications.

Restaurants in Indianapolis and Detroit are increasingly turning to service robots due to hiring challenges and retention from the COVID-19 pandemic and the Great Resignation. A 2023 National Restaurant Association survey underscores the urgency for such innovations. With 79% of restaurant operators facing hiring difficulties and 62% reporting understaffing, service robots are seen as an efficient solution to address frontline service needs, particularly in delivering food to tables. However, successful integration requires careful consideration and preparation. Owners must ensure employees’ buy-in, addressing concerns about the robots’ role and impact on staff responsibilities. Additionally, assessing the physical space for potential obstacles and making necessary design adjustments is crucial. Lastly, fostering an adaptable organizational culture and providing effective training and support for staff is key to successful service robot adoption. Overall, a thoughtful and comprehensive approach is essential to maximize the benefit of service robots in enhancing customer service.
